In2004, Dr. Haifa Reda Jamal Al-Lail, the Dean of Effat College in Jeddah, gave an eloquent and heartfelt speech on the need for “global identity, loyalty and responsibility.” While allowing that such a goal might seem “impossibly idealistic” given the current geopolitical climate, she stressed that “this approach is the only sure way to a better future for us all in this crowded world.” The way to achieve such an ideal, she added, is through increased education, both within individual nations and bet- ween countries.
